Inhoud

It is great to have friends and be liked by your peers. However, friendship does not come easily for all children, especially for those who face more communication challenges, such as children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Hearing Loss (HL), and Specific Language Impairments (SLI). Knowing how to deal with your own emotions and how to react to others’ emotions are the key to successful social interactions. Although emotional functioning has a strong, hard-wired neurological basis, the actual use of emotions in daily life is heavily affected by children’s social experiences, and is modeled through social learning. For children with ASD, HL, and SLI, their communication problems deny them the opportunity for optimal social learning.

In this program, we will unravel the complicated relationship between social access, emotional competence, and psychosocial functioning in children and adolescents with communication problems. Emotional theories and latest research outcomes will be discussed. By the end, we will approach a solution which calls for an inclusive social environment, where children both with and without communication deficits can thrive in their social life.

Participants need not to have a strong background knowledge in psychology. However, active participation in group discussion is warmly welcomed.
