Inhoud

“We are hardwired to connect with others, it’s what gives purpose and meaning to our lives.” - Brené Brown

There are ever increasing options and solutions offered by hearing technology, with more ways for children and teenagers to connect wirelessly than ever before. However this is still no magic adaptor for getting tasks done in the classroom and for making and keeping friends. No magic software to work out how to prioritise and plan homework or stay on task when our focus wanders. And how do we teach our students how to interpret the thoughts and feelings of those around us who help us learn how to socially problem solve and multi task? Our measure for success needs to extend beyond clear speech and hearing conversations and include the skills needed to regulate emotions, plan for the future, remember what we have learnt and thrive socially.

So this workshop will address how we can support these vital skills for getting taks done and thinking socially. We will consider the range of skills needed with an in-depth focus on theory of mind and executive functions. We will explore how these impact our deaf children’s abilities to thrive academically and socially. This will include practical tools and resources to grow social thinking principles and off the shelf ideas for working on executive functions with the children and teenagers.

From this workshop we are hoping you will:

  • Gain knowledge of latest trends and current research into social competence.
  • Connect with new ideas for growing social competence in a range of age groups.
  • Have a working knowledge of executive functions and how to apply it one to one and in groups.
  • Get a chance to explore resources for working on executive functions and think on how to apply them where you work.
  • Get an overview of what the Social Thinking Programme and smiLE Therapy is about and what tools you can go away with and use.
  • Hear about ideas for engaging with families around social thinking.
  • Engage in interesting discussions around how to create groups and manage the dynamics and different ages and abilities.
  • Share and reflect on your daily practice with others.
  • Build a resource folder with materials and tools to use in your daily practice.

Opgelet! Deze workshop wordt volledig in het Engels gegeven.
